China Conducts Massive Gaokao Exam as Millions Compete for University Entry
This year, approximately 12.9 million students registered for the test, a slight decrease of around 450,000 compared with 2025, when about 13.35 million candidates participated, according to China’s Ministry of Education.
Authorities established extensive infrastructure for the nationwide examination, including 7,981 testing centers and roughly 348,000 exam rooms. The first day focused on core subjects such as Chinese language and mathematics.
To maintain exam integrity, officials implemented a range of security measures, including artificial intelligence-based monitoring systems and advanced screening gates designed to detect cheating attempts. Students were prohibited from bringing electronic devices such as mobile phones, smartwatches, and smart glasses into exam venues.
In major cities such as Beijing, students arrived at test centers hours in advance, accompanied by families and volunteers. Some parents wore traditional qipao dresses, a cultural practice associated with good luck during the gaokao period.
Local authorities also mobilized support services, including police assistance, temporary help stations for identification issues, and medical teams to respond to emergencies. In northern Shanxi province, exam centers were reportedly equipped with cooling systems and backup audio equipment to ensure stable conditions during testing.
Beyond logistics, the exam also reflects broader changes in China’s education system. Universities are increasingly introducing new academic programs aligned with national strategic priorities, including fields such as embodied intelligence, brain-computer science, low-altitude economy management, marine intelligence, and unmanned systems.
