India Urges Global Action Against Bioterrorism

(MENAFN) India has emphasized that bioterrorism represents a significant global threat, urging nations to make proper preparations to tackle this danger.

Speaking at a conference commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) on Monday, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar stressed that bioterrorism spreads rapidly, transcends borders, and can overwhelm regulatory and control systems.
Jaishankar described the BWC as a critical safeguard that separates scientific advancement from harmful misuse in the life sciences.

He stated, “Disease must never be used as a weapon,” adding, “Biology must serve peace, not advance harm. Misuse by non-state actors is no longer a distant possibility.”

He further emphasized that no single nation can address such threats independently, highlighting that international collaboration is essential.

“This is precisely why the Global South must be central to today’s discussion,” the Indian foreign minister noted.

Highlighting India’s capabilities in public health, pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and biosciences, Jaishankar pointed out that the country is recognized as the “pharmacy of the world.”

He mentioned that India produces 60% of global vaccines, supplies over 20% of the world’s generic medicines, and provides 60% of Africa’s generic drugs.

In addition, India hosts the third-largest biotech startup ecosystem globally, with nearly 11,000 biotech startups today, a significant rise from just 50 in 2014.

Jaishankar also noted that India has delivered 300 million vaccine doses and medical assistance to over 100 less-developed and vulnerable nations, often at no cost.
